1. Taraniya Thera.-An arahant. In a previous birth he took the Buddha and his monks across a river which was in flood. Thirteen kappas ago he became king five times under the name of Sabhogavā (Ap.i.204f).

He is probably identical with Sambhūta Thera. ThagA.i.47.

 

2. Taraniya Thera.-An arahant. Ninety-one kappas ago he took the Buddha Vipassī and his monks across a river in a boat. Ap.i.234.

 

3. Taraniya Thera.-An arahant. Ninety-one kappas ago he built a bridge on an impassable road. Fifty-five kappas ago he was a king, Samogadha by name. Ap.i.238.

 

4. Taraniya Thera.-An arahant. In a previous birth he was a tortoise in the river Vinatā, and, seeing that the Buddha Atthadassī wished to cross the river, he took him on his back. Ap.ii.428f.
